• Los Angeles drowns, film footage at eleven
  I didn't make it to class. It's been raining in Los Angeles, which sounds like normal winter weather but is in fact THE WORLD COMING TO AN END. Homes are falling off their foundations, rivers of mud are sweeping the roads, entire neighborhoods are under water, and hair gel is failing left and right, with nothing to keep us from the frizz.
  
  Shannon called me a few hours before class started and said, "I don't think I'm going to Lani's today, I just have so much to do and Karman and I have to produce just years of bank statements together for the lender..." (Shannon and Karman are buying a condo!) and I said, "It's raining."
  
  And we both laughed, because neither of us want to go out in the awful weather.
  
  Side note: Rain may not seem like awful weather to you. I grew up in the deep south and rain was an every day thing. But out here in Los Angeles it almost never rains. We only get about seven inches of rain each year and even that is daunting, but this year we have had 33 inches and counting. With all the canyon roads closed from mud and the Sepulveda basin closed from flooding, traffic is an unholy mess. Gridlock is everywhere, even on small neighborhood streets. To drive the 6.5 miles to Lani's I would need to give myself a full hour thanks to the water falling from the sky. While you laugh at us Angelenos and our fussy ways, just remember that we are paying $2.33 a gallon for gas right now. Don't you feel sorry for us? Sad for the poor Hollywoodites and their tragic mist and Starbucks cups and high gas prices? C'mon, even just a little?

• Things I cannot do
  
  1. Wake up without the assistance of an alarm, a dog, two cats, and a husband.
  
  2. Figure out why her shadow makes it look like she has giant alient hands.
  
  3. Care at all what celebrities say/do/think/endorse.
  
  4. Remember to wash off her mascara on the two days a year she wears it.
  
  5. Drive to work without sounding like an angry sailor.
  
  6. Find a pair of shorts that are the right length.
  
  7. Skip a rock on water.
  
  8. Resist using Shorty’s paws to keep the beat as she makes him “rap” while sleeping: “My name is Shorty and I’m here to say, it’s in your lap I would like to stay…yo, yo, yo. Peace out!”
  
  9. Keep up with the tremendously ridiculous weed growth in the yard.
  
  10. Beat Jason at cribbage (down 31 games so far).
  
  11. Stop eating circus peanuts.

  Well I blog about my family and kids but I don’t share too many details. I guess. LOL
  
  I stay out of the fights and ugliness just because I don’t want to throw myself out there - it’s a risk I’m not willing to take. I guess I haven’t been provoked enough to say something. There’s such a fine line to walk and I’ve seen too many people get bullied or hell, blackballed even and I certainly don’t want THAT to happen.

• Addicted to the iPod Touch by Moira Rogers
  Hello there!  Shelli invited me over today, so I’m here to talk about a problem I have.
  
  My name is Bree (half of the Moira Rogers writing team), and I’m addicted to my iPod Touch.
  
  For those of you who have not been lured into the twisted web of the iPod Touch (or its bigger, badder brother, the iPhone) you don’t know what temptations you’re missing.  Not only can I load that baby up with all the mood music and inspirational photos I want, I can program it to connect to my WiFi and give me instant access to the internet.  And iTunes.  And Amazon.  And Stanza.
  
  That’s right, I can browse Amazon from my iPod and order things by pointing to them on the screen.  One-touch buy.  I can preview a song I want on iTunes and have it 2 seconds later on my iPod.  I can browse a wide collection of ebooks through Stanza and download them to my iPod to read at my leisure.
  
  Instant gratification.  Oh God, that is so dangerous.  Especially since I don’t have to take out my credit card.  It’s not like buying anything at all! I’m just poking at an iPod screen!  No harm in that!
  …well, until the bills come.
  
  Truly, the iPod Touch is the most devilish of devices, which is why my partner-in-crime and I decided we had to spread the addiction around.  When we stumbled across a spare 8GB iPod Touch a few months ago, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to hook someone else on the giddy joys of instant gratification.

• Packaging for Dummies
  Yesterday my boss got a package. He wasn’t here, so a co-worker signed for it. It looked like this:
  
  
  
  My co-worker couldn’t believe how light it was: “It feels like nothing is in here!”
  
  Turns out she was mostly right.
  
  This morning, my boss opened the box:
  
  
  
  To reveal the world’s longest unbroken length of kraft paper:
  
  
  There was so much, that when we straightened it out later, it was the length of at least four cubicles.
  
  In my head, I pictured the packaging guy grabbing this:
  
  
  And then hearing a really great song come on the radio, compelling him to temporarily lose his faculties and dance wildly around the warehouse while twirling the paper.
  
  Anyway, my boss finally got rid of the paper to reveal:
  
  
  A padded envelope.
  
  And in that small padded envelope was:
  
  
  
  A computer mouse.
  
  So, to sum up, here are the correct steps for packaging a computer mouse:
  
      Place mouse in small padded envelope.
      Place small padded envelope in gigantic cardboard box.
      Stuff the crap out of the box with 47 feet of kraft paper.
      Send package to arrive a month and a half after order is placed.
